Fontaine is both more and less than a gang leader. His rag-tag bunch of m'bushi followers, Bama, is more a cult than a gang. Bama keeps to the sand, refusing to come in out of the wilderness. Fontaine's peers struggle for power, for influence, for food. Fontaine barely seems interested in any of these things. What does he want? His motives are hard to read, but one thing is clear: upon discovering something edible actually growing on Oasis, he does a dance to the war he now knows is imminent.
