Silas, the leader of Las Cruces, is one of the most powerful beings on the world. Though he passes as a human, he is actually an eons-old creature from a time when the planet Oasis was young. His gang, Las Cruces, is the newest of Scare City’s big players. Silas's internal monologues give us a window into the hatred and rage the indigenous beings of Oasis feel toward the human exiles. Silas is not just sitting around seething about it, though, he’s doing something about it. Whether in his human or alien guise, Silas’s mind is always on his dark and deeply-laid schemes, he is present but not present, his thousand-yard stare a mask for a mind bent on removing the humans from his home. There are echoes of other literary characters in Silas, notably Shakespeare’s Caliban and James Fenimore Cooper’s Magua. Like Magua and Caliban, Silas is presented as having legitimate reasons for his enmity toward the foreign occupiers.
